Unit Overview

The following integrated unit of work draws on outcomes from both the HSIE KLA and English KLA.

Students have spent 3 weeks of HSIE working on a locally adapted version of the NSW Board of StudiesUnit Places: Then, Now and Tomorrow. The focus of this has been taking the perspective of different community groups in terms of the affects that changes in the local environment on have their lives. They have compared historic and contemporay images of local land use and discussed with their local elders (Indig and non-Indigenous) changes that have occured in their lifetimes. The book My Place by Nadia Wheatley has been used as a way of accessing multiple perspectives and relating this to known groups in their area.

The Literacy component of this unit consists of 10 lessons which will explore the place of texts (written, visual and multimodal) in the communal negotiation of the use of land. Emphasis will be on the diversity of group perspectives within the community. Students will be guided towrds the deign and creation of a rich multimodal task that will draw on knowledge, skills and understanding gained in both Litarecy and HSIE lessons.
